Workforce Demand for IT Security Professionals and Certification
The 2008 (ISC)˛ Global Information Security Workforce Study by Frost & Sullivan found that:
- Between 2007 and 2012 the number of information security professionals worldwide is expected to increase by over a million professionals growing at a compound annual growth rate of 10%.
- 78% of hiring managers cited security certifications as a hiring criteria as either "Very important" or "Somewhat Important"
The Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) research studies on computer security indicate that:
- Among all IT skills, security has the largest the gap between demand and supply of proficient workers (2007)
- IT managers indicate that security is a top priority (2008)
- 84% of managers who mandate IT Security certifications believe that security certifications improved their company’s overall IT security
The newly released DoD Directive 8570.1M establishes regulations for Information Assurance (IT Security) training and certification for all military, government, and contractor personnel involved with the IA aspect of a system. In part, Directive 8570 states that:
- The directive covers all Military, Federal, Contractor, and Foreign National Personnel – full- and part-time
- The directive applies to any of the above that are considered "Privileged Users" whose jobs require access to privileged systems or whose jobs pose an increased level of IA risk.
- These positions must be filled by personnel who have been trained and hold appropriate certifications in IA.
Job Openings for IT Security Experts
- On May 12, 2009, USAJobs.com listed 658 IT security positions open in the U.S. federal government alone, and Monster.com listed more than 5,000 open IT Security/Network Security positions in the U.S. private sector.
- U.S. Dept of Labor reports that Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts are the fastest growing professional occupations with 53% growth projected from 2006-2016. Computer Security is a subset of networking and data communications.
Salaries for IT Security Professionals
- Pay is rising considerably for IT professionals with security certifications. A 2008 Foote Partners Research study found that six of the fourteen IT certifications with the most dramatic growth in pay are IT security certifications.
